🔥They're not lazy because they're working from home.
They're just lazy.

I keep hearing this;

“They’re not engaged anymore.”

“I can’t see what they’re doing.”

“Remote just isn’t working for our team.”

But let me ask you this -

↳ Were they actually performing in the office?
↳ Or were they just visible?
↳ Did you ever have systems in place to track performance, or were you relying on vibes and presenteeism?

Because remote working didn’t break accountability.

It just exposed where there wasn’t any to begin with.

If someone can’t self-manage, that’s a capability issue.

If someone isn’t clear on expectations, that’s a leadership issue.

And if you’re still using proximity to measure performance -

You’re setting yourself up for legal and reputational risk.

And did you even begin to consider gender equity?

Women, especially, face more scrutiny when working remotely.

They’re expected to be more ‘visible’, even if they’re delivering better results.

This hidden bias often results in unfair performance assessments and dampens progression opportunities.

This isn’t about giving everyone flexibility.

It’s about setting standards that work regardless of location.

So, don’t have a remote working problem....

You have an accountability problem.

Here’s what to do instead:

➊ Create output-based KPIs.
Define what good looks like, even if you can’t see it happening.

➋ Document expectations for remote/hybrid working.
Yes, that means actual policies. Yes, they need to be gender- and disability-aware.

No, vibes don’t count.

➌ Address capability and behaviour separately.
If someone’s not performing, remote work isn’t the scapegoat.

Start tracking outcomes, not assumptions.

📣 What’s really behind your team’s performance dip - location, or leadership?
