Airport “Farewell Fees” Are Soaring

But What Does This Really Signal About the Future of UK Travel? ✈️

New analysis from the RAC shows that airport drop‑off fees across the UK have jumped by a third since last summer.

Sixteen of the UK’s 20 busiest airports have increased their charges and some of the numbers are wallet busting!

London Gatwick now leads the way with a £10 fee for just 10 minutes. London Stansted matches the £10 price tag but gives drivers 15 minutes, whereas London City Airport, which only introduced charges this year, is now the most expensive per minute at £1.60.

Meanwhile, none of the top 10 EU airports charge for drop‑offs at all.
Airports argue these fees support congestion management, local air‑quality goals and climate commitments.

Campaign groups say they encourage travellers to use public transport. Others, including the Business Travel Association, say the justifications keep shifting, and the rising costs are hitting passengers and businesses hard, when many believe that they don't need too.

Whatever your view, one thing is clear: the UK is moving further away from global norms, and travellers need to be more vigilant than ever. With barrierless “park now, pay later” zones, failing to pay online or by phone can quickly turn into a penalty charge.

A few practical ways to avoid unexpected costs:

🌍Check fees before setting off - Blue Badge holders are often exempt.
🌍Look for cheaper or free long‑stay drop‑off zones with shuttle buses.
🌍Consider public transport alternatives
🌍Keep goodbyes short to avoid overstaying.
🌍Confirm whether taxis include the fee in their fare.

As travel behaviours evolve and as airports push harder for public‑transport‑led access these charges are becoming a defining part of the UK airport experience.

The real question is whether this trend genuinely drives sustainability or simply adds friction to an already costly travel ecosystem.

👉 What do you think? Are these fees a necessary nudge toward greener travel, or just another avoidable cost for passengers? Share your thoughts below.
